The NCAA has announced the specific details of a rule proposal to permit student athletes from profiting off their names, images, and likenesses, according to USA Today reporter Steve Berkowitz.
If approved, the new rules would take effect on Aug. 1, 2021 for Division I athletes.
Student athletes would also be permitted to earn money from autographs and offering instruction lessons. Additionally, they would be permitted to use crowdfunding sites to raise money for educational fees that exceed the cost of attendance.
Student athletes would be allowed to sell memorabilia at the conclusion of their college eligibility.
The proposed rule changes provide universities with the opportunity to block student athletes from entering into deals that could clash with already in place sponsorship arrangements. The restricts could make issues for the NCAA in four states where a provision of law has been passed.
The proposed rule changes will be voted on in January by the NCAA Division I Council. Prior to the voting, conferences can offer amendments until Dec. 15.
