Move over crystal football.
There’s a new piece of championship hardware in town.
The College Football Playoff unveiled its national championship trophy Monday, a fine piece of 24-karat gold, bronze and stainless steel weighing 35 pounds with a detachable base for hoisting. Designed by Pentagram standing 3-feet tall, the design features a focused football at the center of the base that rises to form an actual-size ball.
“An ascending virtual football, the trophy’s handcrafted gold brackets surround a hardened steel core. The trophy was created to be raised in celebration of the highest level of team achievement in college football.”
It’s important to note that the crystal football trophy, synonymous with the Bowl Championship Series, hasn’t been discarded. The $30,000 trophy will be presented on campus by the AFCA to the top-ranked team in the coaches’ poll.
