New Mexico State QB attempts ill-advised pass in Week 0 loss to UMass

It’s Week 0, which means some laughable and questionable moments as players gain their bearings for the long season ahead.

New Mexico State vs. UMass gave us an early-season candidate for a gag play of the year.

In the third quarter, Diego Pavia found himself scrambling while looking for an open receiver. In an attempt to bring him down, a defensive lineman caught hold of Pavia’s face mask and flipped his helmet all the way around, leaving Pavia blindfolded for the remainder of the play.

There was obviously a face mask penalty called, but a blindfolded Pavia still attempted a pass, though it’s not clear if it was completed or not. There was likely a conversation on the sideline about why a quarterback shouldn’t make a blind pass afterwards.

New Mexico State went on to lose that game 41-30, but Pavia had a worthy performance with 248 yards and 3 touchdowns, though he also threw a pair of interceptions.
