NFL Draft 2025: Former LSU tackle Will Campbell picked No. 4 overall in Round 1
For a second consecutive season, a former LSU star has been drafted with a top-5 pick.
On Thursday night, the New England Patriots selected offensive tackle Will Campbell with the No. 4 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
LSU’s history with NFL draft picks is long and storied. With his first-round selection, Campbell became the 53rd former Tiger to be drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft in LSU football history. He’s also the first offensive lineman to be selected in the opening round since Alan Faneca in 1998.
The 6-foot-6, 319-pound Campbell was a 3-year starter for LSU. He took starting reps at left tackle from the instant he stepped on campus as a freshman and closed out his Tiger career with 38 consecutive starts. In 3 years, he played every offensive snap in 23 of LSU’s 25 games against SEC opponents.
But Campbell wasn’t just a mainstay in the lineup, he was consistently one of the best tackles in the country. He was a FWAA Freshman All-American in 2022, a first-team All-SEC selection in 2023, and a consensus first-team All-American in 2024. He also won the SEC Jacobs Blocking Trophy last fall.
Over his final 25 games, Campbell allowed only 2 sacks.
A homegrown talent through and through, Campbell signed with the Tigers as a 4-star, top-50 recruit in 2022. He played his high school ball for Neville in Monroe, Louisiana.
He’ll join a New England squad that limped to a second consecutive 4-13 record last season. The Patriots need Campbell to provide immediate relief to last year’s first-round pick, quarterback Drake Maye. In his rookie season, Maye was sacked 34 times in 13 games.
Derek Peterson does a bit of everything, not unlike Taysom Hill. He has covered Oklahoma, Nebraska, the Pac-12, and now delivers CFB-wide content.
