Alabama had a solid season opener, defeating Utah State 55-0.
The Crimson Tide performed well in several phases of the game as they do every year as the nation’s most dominant team, but in the eyes of head coach Nick Saban, there is always room for improvement.
One particular area within the ground game will be a point of focus as the team prepares for its next matchup early on in the season.
“I look at how we ran the ball more as, OK, we had an explosive run – Jahmyr Gibbs,” Saban told reporters after the game. “Bryce had an explosive run on a scramble, aight. But what was the down in and down out consistency in terms of how we were successful at gaining three, four, five yards a crack. That wasn’t what it needed to be. So that’s something that we need to improve on.”
Quarterback Bryce Young finished out the game as the team’s leading rusher with five carries for 100 yards with one touchdowns. Gibbs was right behind him, close to the century-mark with nine carries for 93 yards.
Alabama will face the Texas Longhorns up next on the road at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday.
