Nick Saban explains why he doesn’t think new clock rules will have a ‘tremendous impact’ on CFB
While some coaches have made it known that they are against new clock rules, Alabama head coach Nick Saban is more neutral to the changes.
The biggest new rule is that the clock will no longer stop after first downs, except those that come in the final 2 minutes of a half. The new rules also state that teams cannot call consecutive timeouts and that untimed downs will only happen in the second and fourth quarter.
Saban doesn’t see these rules having a great impact, he explained at the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday.
“I don’t think they’re going to have a tremendous impact. The clock not stopping on first downs is not going to be a huge thing and I don’t think the timeout rules, they could have some impact at the end of the game, but everybody understands what they are. So I don’t really think it’s significant. I do think that when you get up in the 80s and 90s in terms of number of plays that you play in a game, and how long a game becomes for the players, is probably something that we need to continue to evaluate.”
We will get a good look at how much of an impact the new rules have this Saturday. Saban and his squad begin their season against MTSU at 7:30 p.m. ET.
