Alabama head coach Nick Saban has high praise for his Week 1 adversary, Duke football coach David Cutcliffe. The Crimson Tide and Cutcliffe’s Blue Devils will play Saturday afternoon at the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta.

Cutcliffe has a rich history with grooming quarterbacks, including Peyton and Eli Manning. Most recently, the Blue Devils head coach turned Daniel Jones into the sixth pick of the NFL Draft to the New York Giants. Jones was originally unrated as a college prospect.

“I’ve always thought that he is one of the best quarterback coaches in the country,” Saban said in his Monday news conference. “Obviously, his track record has proven that. He has that reputation, so I think a lot of players are interested in playing for him. He does a fabulous job of developing those players, but their system and scheme of offense is so well-conceived, and that gives players at all positions the chance to be able to be successful.

“Their quarterbacks have the consistency that everybody looks for, because their system allows them to make quick decisions and get the ball out of their hands.”

Cutcliffe has rejuvenated a once dismal Duke football program into a formidable opponent on any team’s schedule. Since his first four seasons at Duke, Cutcliffe has gone 52-39 with his 2013 team reaching the ACC title game.

It certainly says a lot when one of the best college football coaches recognizes the journey of the quarterbacks at Duke University, a basketball school at heart.
