Giving out injury reports is always a tough job for a coach.
A lot of the time, a player will be a game-time decision and it’s hard to say ahead of time whether or not they will be ready to go.
In today’s landscape, giving out injury reports becomes increasingly complicated with the rise of sports gambling. If a coach has to give out an injury report but doesn’t know that status of a player yet, it could sway the odds one way or another.
Alabama head coach Nick Saban gave his thoughts on making injury reports public during the SEC coaches teleconference on Wednesday.
“I respect the fact that the media has a job to do and wants to get as much information as they can,” Saban said. “We try to do that on a timely basis. But also we don’t want to create disadvantages for ourselves where situations for the players are relatively unknown or day to day. Don’t know how they’re going to be by game time. It’s kind of a tough situation to be in. But we respect the fact that you all have a job to do and need to get information as timely as possible.”
