A few days out from Alabama’s season opener against MTSU, head coach Nick Saban gave an update on the Tide’s competition at the safety spot.

Alabama will likely look to some new faces in the safety position. Freshman Caleb Downs is one of those new faces that could be getting the starting job.

“Caleb’s done a really good job. I know he’s a young player, but he’s done a really good job,” Saban said in his Monday press conference. “He’s smart, he’s bright, he understands football very well.”

Another new face for the Tide is senior transfer Jaylen Key, who spent 4 seasons at UAB and had a breakout season last year.

“Jalen Key has done a really good job. He’s got a lot of experience,” Saban said. “Even though he hasn’t played here, he’s played other places in a very similar system.”

Saban also mentioned Malachi Moore and Christian Story, two players that can play in the star or safety position. He also said that DeVonta Smith Jr. could get reps at safety when healthy.
