Nico Iamaleava reportedly no-shows Tennessee practice amidst reported contract talks
Nico Iamaleava did not show up for Tennessee’s practice on Friday morning as rumors swirl about his future, according to a report.
That’s per ESPN’s Chris Low, who notes Iamaleava’s absence came as a “surprise” to both coaches and players. The Vols are scheduled to hold their annual Orange & White game on Saturday but there’s now increasing uncertainty about whether or not their multi-million dollar quarterback will be present for the showcase.
Multiple members of Iamaleava’s camp have denied the contract negotiations since On3 first broke the news on Thursday. However, Iamaleava’s absence on Friday certainly points to some potential uncertainty regarding his status in Knoxville.
Low reports that frustration over the talks has been mounting within Tennessee’s administration:
Iamaleava had a strong first year as Tennessee’s starter in 2024 as he led the Vols to the College Football Playoff for the first time. Now, entering what would be his 3rd year overall in college football, Iamaleava seems to be negotiating for a bigger payday ahead of the 2025 season.
The spring transfer portal window opens on Wednesday and Iamaleava could theoretically leave Tennessee for greener pastures this spring. If he does depart, it would shake up the quarterback landscape in an unprecedented fashion since the start of the NIL era. He would immediately become a top target for any program looking to upgrade at the QB position for 2025.
Tennessee’s annual Orange & White game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon.
