Report: Mississippi State set to hire Nikki McCray-Penson as head women’s basketball coach

Mississippi State’s women’s basketball team may have a new head coach soon.
The Dispatch’s Ben Portnoy is reporting that athletic director John Cohen is set to hire Old Dominion head coach Nikki McCray-Penson to replace Vic Schaefer. Schaefer left Mississippi State for the Texas job on April 5, and it didn’t take the Bulldogs long to hire his replacement.
The Collierville, Tennessee, native McCray-Penson has coached at Old Dominion since 2017. She has posted a 49-36 overall record, including back-to-back 20-win seasons. Prior to ODU, McCray-Penson was an assistant at South Carolina under Dawn Staley.
McCray-Penson also played under the legendary former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt from 1991-95 and went on to become a 2-time SEC Player of the Year in 1994-95. She later became a 3-time WNBA All-Star and 2-time Olympic medalist.
Multiple reports suggested that MSU was down to McCray-Penson and Louisville head coach Jeff Walz.
