North Carolina is entering a new era as Bill Belichick was named the head coach this offseason. Now, the Tar Heels have a new quarterback.

North Carolina got some good news on Thursday night as South Alabama transfer quarterback Gio Lopez reportedly committed to Belichick’s program. That’s according to 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz:

Lopez had a terrific redshirt freshman campaign last year. He threw for 2,559 yards and 18 touchdowns, while also running for another 7 touchdowns. In the season opener, he threw for 432 yards and 3 touchdowns, while also rushing for 62 yards and another score.

Before Lopez committed, the only other 2 quarterbacks for North Carolina were Max Johnson and freshman Bryce Baker. Johnson was the starter last year, but he suffered a season-ending injury in a loss to Minnesota in the opener.

The Tar Heels are coming off a disappointing 6-7 season in 2024 in Mack Brown’s final season in Chapel Hill. They lose their best player in running back Omarion Hampton, who figures to hear his name early in the 2025 NFL Draft.

North Carolina will be hoping to take a big step forward in Year 1 under Belichick.
