Following the firing of head coach Mack Brown, North Carolina made an announcement as to who its interim head coach will be when the team competes in its upcoming bowl game.
In the interim period, the Tar Heels will be led by Freddie Kitchens, who previously served as the program’s tight ends coach and run game coordinator.

Kitchens has a lengthy coaching history at both the collegiate and professional levels. He started as a running backs coach at Glenville State in 1999 before filling a variety of assistant roles LSU, North Texas and Mississippi State.
From there, Kitchens moved on to work with tight ends for the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals, and he remained in the desert as quarterbacks coach and then running backs coach from 2013-2017.
He’s most known for his time with the Cleveland Browns, where he was associate head coach and offensive coordinator before taking on the head coaching gig for the 2019 season. Kitchens then moved on to work with tight ends for the New York Giants following a difficult season as the man in charge, and he remained in New York from 2020-21.
“Freddie Kitchens is an incredibly talented coach who is respected by our student-athletes and staff,” athletic director Bubba Cunningham said in a press release. “He is dedicated to doing all he can to help lead our program through this transition, and we appreciate his willingness to take on this role.”
Prior to landing in Chapel Hill, Kitchens was a senior analyst with South Carolina.
North Carolina will now await its bowl destination following a 6-6 campaign.
