Inside look: Recruiting visits from a player’s perspective

People have always asked me what official visits were like and where I went for my visits.

I not only took all of my official visits, but I took several unofficial visits as well. If there is any advice I can give to college prospects, it is to take as many visits and soak in as much as possible. This is, arguably, the biggest decision of your life up to this point, and the decision could impact you for the rest of your life.

I went to South Carolina, Ole Miss, Georgia, Florida, Florida State, USF, and Boston College. My two older brothers played football at Harvard, so I went up to Boston many times and I really liked Boston College a lot. However, I wanted to play in the best conference in the country, the SEC.

I would love to disclose what all my visits entailed, but I think there are some things that shouldn’t be told. There was nothing ever too crazy that went on, so hold your horses.

The schedule was about the same at each school. My parents and I would arrive at the stadium and have a meeting with the head coach and offensive assistants. We’d just sit and talk for a little about the program and what the coach saw in my future at the certain school. After the meeting, the host would come and greet me and whomever else was on the visit. We’d go to dinner and then we would go hang out with all the other players for the rest of the night.

The next day we would wake up at our hotel and get taken to meet the coaches and parents at breakfast. After a quick bite to eat, we would then get a tour of the campus and see all the unique features of the school. We’d then go meet the rest of the staff, that includes the academic folks, the medical staff, the strength and conditioning staff (always wired 24-7), and then finally the athletic director.

These visits did take up your entire day and I could see some kids lost interest when we met with the academic and medical people, but those guys are arguably the most important. I can see that some kids could get overwhelmed by all the commotion, but it’s necessary. As a recruit, we had to soak it all in and see the school as a whole, not just the locker room and stadium.

If I could do the recruiting process all over again, I wouldn’t hesitate. I had an absolutely amazing time and I really enjoy meeting new people and seeing different cultures. The difference between Ole Miss and Boston College was night and day. If you’re a recruit, you absolutely need to take that adventure while schools are paying for those trips.
