Take a quick sigh of relief, Oklahoma fans: Sooners center Jake Maikkula’s knee injury is not thought to be season-ending, according to a report from Pete Nakos and other Sooners outlets on Monday.
The Oklahoma center was seen visibly emotional after his leg was rolled up on during the Sooners’ scrimmage on Saturday, prompting concerns that the injury could be season-ending. Instead, Maikkula was diagnosed with a sprained MCL that could put him out of action for 4-6 weeks, according to Sooners on SI.
Oklahoma’s first game of the 2026 season is set for September 4, a little under 3 weeks from now.
Obviously, that’s great news for Maikkula and the Sooners all things considered. An infection kept Maikkula out of OU’s regular season finale against LSU and the Sooners’ CFP matchup against Alabama, but he started 10 of 11 games for Oklahoma before that setback. Once healthy, the fifth-year senior is expected to play a major role along Oklahoma’s offensive line.
Maikkula is entering his second season at Oklahoma after starting his career at Stanford in 2022. He redshirted his first season and started 16 games at guard and center across the following 2 seasons with the Cardinal.
