Oklahoma rushes the field for first time since 2000 … a little bit early

Oklahoma defeated Alabama 24-3 on Saturday night in stunning fashion.

The victory is a historic one for the Sooners — it’s their first home win over an SEC foe since joining the conference this season. It also represents OU’s first home win over a top-10 team in the Brent Venables era.

Given the magnitude of the moment, Oklahoma fans decided to celebrate by storming the field. Only 1 problem: they went a little bit early.

OU fans began rushing the field after the Sooners called timeout with 28 seconds remaining on the game clock:

Eventually, the field was cleared so OU could take one final knee and run out the rest of the clock. After that formality was complete, OU fans were able to rush the field for real.

This is not the first time this has happened in the SEC this season. Ole Miss had a similar incident after its win over Georgia a couple weeks ago. In Ole Miss’s case, the SEC fined the Rebels an additional $100,000 fine because fans entered the playing field before the conclusion of the game.

Rushing the field isn’t something that has happened very often in Norman in recent memory. It hasn’t happened at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium since the Sooners’ landmark win over Nebraska way back in 2000.

Once the game was officially over, here’s what the scene looked like on Owen Field:
