Ole Miss is preparing to take on Duke in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl on Jan. 2. Ahead of that matchup, the team is working to bring in quality players via the transfer portal for the 2025 season.

Per a report from On3’s Pete Nakos, the Rebels are one of the teams to watch for former Tulane running back Makhi Hughes. Duke and Colorado are reported to be the other schools in the mix for the running back’s services early.

Hughes entered the portal on Friday after starring for the Green Wave in the previous 2 seasons. In 2023 and 2024, Hughes racked up 2,779 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns. The RB surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in both of his seasons with the program.

The Rebels could use help in the ground game for 2025. In 2024, Henry Parrish Jr. led the team with 678 rushing yards and 10 TDs. Two of the team’s RBs, Matt Jones and Rashad Amos, have entered the portal already this offseason.

Ole Miss has already added 1 RB, bringing in Kewan Lacy from Missouri. Lacy was used sparingly with the Tigers, rushing for 104 yards in 2024.

Before heading to Tulane, Hughes starred for Huffman High School in Birmingham, AL. The 247Sports Composite ranking had Hughes as a 3-star prospect and the No. 47 player out of Alabama in the 2022 class. Hughes originally committed to Appalachian State before flipping to Tulane.

So far, the Rebels have added 15 players via the portal while seeing 15 players enter. Deuce Alexander and De’Zhaun Stribling have already been added to the offense and Hughes would only make the unit more impressive.
