Pat McAfee has been a staple for ESPN’s “College GameDay” desk in recent seasons. However, the popular personality for the network reportedly remains unsigned to return to GameDay this fall.

That’s per Andrew Marchand with The Athletic who reports McAfee has stated he will return but has not yet signed a contract to appear on GameDay. McAfee’s deal to appear on “College GameDay” is a separate contract from the one with ESPN that allows the network to license his “The Pat McAfee Show” on the network and on YouTube.

The GameDay desk will already have a new look this fall with Nick Saban joining the crew. However, the assumption has been that Saban would join the existing group of Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Lee Corso and McAfee.

Reactions to McAfee’s 2023 performance and overall fit on the desk were mixed. He addressed the negative reactions of fans and admitted — at the time — that it was a possibility he might not return in 2024. McAfee has received staunch support from his GameDay co-hosts publicly, including Kirk Herbstreit who claimed he would also not return if McAfee was not back with the crew in 2024.

Marchand did report McAfee and ESPN are still working toward a deal, so it’s possible this is just a simple delay before finalizing McAfee’s spot with the show this fall. It will also be interesting to see if McAfee comments on the situation publicly via his daily show on the network.
