Throughout training camp for the Patriots, Jones was wearing the No. 50 jersey — a tradition in New England. The tradition for the No. 50 jersey is that it goes to the first rookie selected by the Patriots in that year’s NFL Draft. Jones was selected in the first round, with the 15th overall pick.
The announcement of the rookies’ jersey numbers was made as the Patriots prepare to host the Washington Football Team on Thursday night.
Jones is competing with former Auburn Tigers quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner in Cam Newton for the starting quarterback position. Both Jones and Newton are expecting to play against Washington.
