Paul Finebaum eviscerates CFP committee over UGA ranking: ‘Are they watching football?’

Paul Finebaum was not pleased with where the College Football Playoff committee ranked the Georgia Bulldogs in their latest release of the rankings.
The committee had Kirby Smart’s team at No. 12 overall. Unfortunately, that has the Bulldogs currently out of the Playoff bracket with the highest-ranked Group of 5 champion (currently Boise State at No. 13 on the rankings) guaranteed a spot in the final field.
Finebaum thought such a ranking was blasphemy, considering the toughness of Georgia’s schedule and the true legitimacy of Ole Miss as an opponent. He went in on the committee during a Wednesday appearance for ESPN’s First Take:
“You have to start by saying that what the committee said last night was a complete travesty,” Finebaum said. “ They sit in a room at a five-star resort ordering caviar and champagne and sit around and talk about college football when they have 4,000 members to look at. So, I don’t know how they came up with these numbers.
“Georgia started the season against Clemson which has been ranked in the top 10 at the time. Their road schedule has been the toughest of anyone in the country, as you pointed out. They went to Alabama, Texas and Ole Miss. They’ve all been ranked in the top 10. They also went to Kentucky, which is very poor but they did beat Ole Miss, which is ranked inside the system.”
Finebaum went on to say it’s “embarrassing” for the sport to entrust the future of the postseason with this kind of committee while wondering if they’re even truly watching the games on the field:
“Are they watching football games or are they just looking at these thousand data points and just coming up with some conclusion?” pressed Finebaum. “It’s really embarrassing that college football, which is a great game, has invested to these people the challenge of coming up with an equitable Playoff.”
It is hard to argue with Finebaum here. This has been a year of pure shakeup within the SEC and it seems that there is no true top dog. And, if anything, Ole Miss looks as competitive as it ever has.
Georgia will continue to have the opportunity to prove itself as a true contender, facing a big one coming up as the Bulldogs prepare to take on the visiting Tennessee Volunteers with “College GameDay” out on the scene on Nov. 16.
