Paul Finebaum points to ‘significant’ impact of Auburn’s win over Kentucky

Paul Finebaum has been as critical as anybody on the performance of Auburn and specifically coach Hugh Freeze this season. Last Saturday, the Tigers got their first SEC win of the season, as they went to Lexington and knocked off Kentucky by a score of 24-10.
During his appearance on the McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning show, Finebaum said getting over that losing streak was huge for the Tigers.
“It felt like that win (over Kentucky) saved the season because losing to a really down Kentucky team would have just finished everything off,” Finebaum said. “Right now, you can look at the schedule and find wins if you want, you can be pessimistic if you want. But there’s nothing like just ending a losing streak and ending what felt like a hopeless feeling. And I think that’s really significant.”
Throughout the season, there have been times where Auburn has done some good stuff before finding ways to lose. The Tigers controlled much of the game against Oklahoma, but a pick-6 did them in. In the game at Missouri 2 weeks ago, Auburn was up 11 at the start of the 4th, but lost in the final minute.
Turnovers and mistakes have played a huge factor in the losses this year, and Finebaum said showing they can go win a game on the road and not beat themselves gives hope that they can still end this season with some momentum.
“Everyone’s aware of what Kentucky has done, and that’s not really the point,” Finebaum said. “The fact you can go on the road, look like a real football team and not give games away is significant. Now you can say we did this, we did that, we almost did that, and if the turnovers stop then maybe the season can still have some momentum. And that’s really what you’re talking about.”
Auburn has a chance to secure another SEC victory next week as the Tigers host Vanderbilt.
