Paul Finebaum has been through a wide array of eras within the SEC, and things in the conference are unlikely to be settled just yet in this new era of college athletics.
Last year, the league officially welcomed in Texas and Oklahoma from the Big 12, bringing the SEC up to 16 programs. However, just last week, it was reported that North Carolina is “aiming” for the SEC if (and when) the Tar Heels reach a decision to exit the ACC.
During Finebaum’s Monday morning appearance for “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning,” he was asked about his take on the report, and Finebaum believes it is representation of the “anxious” programs still within the ACC:
“It sounds very much to me like people close to North Carolina are floating this out there, probably frustrated with their current position,” said Finebaum. “Even though the ACC is now singing kumbaya, we all know there are a lot of anxious schools in there.”
Finebaum also believes UNC is a good fit for the SEC, if the conference expands further. His bigger questions are who would come with the Tar Heels, and what does the timeline look like:
“I think ultimately it’s going to happen,” Finebaum predicted. “Once we get to this next iteration, North Carolina has always been the No. 1 choice of many people in SEC circles. I think the bigger question is when exactly does it happen, and secondly, who would their drafting partner be?”

According to the initial report, the 2030-31 season, when ACC departure fees dip significantly, could serve as a “final line of demarcation,” but only if the Tar Heels haven’t made their exit before then. While no decision appears imminent, it’s safe to safe conference realignment is far from over.
