Paul Finebaum says Michigan has ‘no shot’ to make the CFP after Texas loss

Paul Finebaum doesn’t see a path where the Michigan Wolverines can get back to the College Football Playoff in 2024.
On Saturday, Michigan hosted Texas in the Big House, one of the toughest environments to play in all of college football. And the Longhorns cruised to a dominant 31-12 victory, with Michigan never challenging them from the opening whistle through all 4 quarters.
Finebaum joined ESPN’s SportsCenter on Sunday following the loss and gave a blunt honest take about his thoughts on the state of the Wolverines.
“This is where I think the season really goes haywire for them, because they had to beat somebody,” Finebaum said on SportsCenter Sunday morning, via On3. “They had to make enough, they had to pull an upset, I think, to get to the playoffs. Texas was one of those schools and now, there’s an impossible path, quite frankly. I don’t want to write this entire season off because they were playing one of the 3 or 4 best teams in the country yesterday, but they were at home, and they were so ineffectual.”
Sitting at 1-1, Michigan still faces USC, Oregon and of course Ohio State, who are all undefeated and currently ranked. The Wolverines’ defense still has the ability to keep Michigan competitive against top-tier opponents, but the Wolverines have to find a solution on offense.
Texas held Michigan to just 3-of-14 on third down and forced 3 turnovers.
Finebaum doesn’t believe this year’s Michigan tam is good enough to even reach the 12-team College Football Playoff.
“So this program has virtually no shot, I think, in making the playoff,” Finebaum said. “They can have a decent season under Sherrone Moore, his first year as the head coach but I think any hopes of repeating, any hopes of getting back, I think they’re done.”
