Payton Thorne says fans request money on Venmo following losses

Payton Thorne struggled in Auburn’s unexpected home loss to Cal on Saturday — and it’s no surprise — there are plenty of Tigers’ fans calling for a quarterback change.
Thorne finished the game 14-of-27 with 165 passing yards, 1 touchdown and 4 interceptions in the Tigers’ 21-14 loss to the Golden Bears.
The Auburn QB joined the Next Round podcast following the loss and was asked about the constant struggle of trying to thrive as a key starter in the ultra-competitive SEC despite constant criticism.

“Everyone says just don’t listen to it and all that, sometimes that’s easier said than done,” Thorne responded.
“In today’s world they come at you at all different angles,” the Auburn QB continued. “You hear it verbally, and that’s probably the least one, just walking down the street you hear it sometimes. And then obviously the social medias, they hit you on Venmo sometimes and all types of stuff.”
The podcast hosts were clearly stunned when Thorne mentioned Venmo.
“They are coming after your Venmo, Payton?” One of the hosts asked for clarification and thought Thorne meant fans were sending him cash.
“No, they definitely aren’t sending me cash,” Thorne responded. “It’s funny, when they lose money they want the money back, but when they win money on the parlay no one has ever sent me any money.”
That response led the hosts to erupt in laughter.
But Thorne’s answer was a reminder of the length fans go to in the modern world to let their opinion be known. It’s a wild reality of where we are at when it comes to college football in 2024.
