Peach Bowl says Texas can’t bring Bevo on field during CFP quarterfinal game
Peach Bowl officials made no friends in the state of Texas on Monday.
The venue is one of the games everyone looks forward to each year. In 2024, the bowl will host a College Football Playoff quarterfinal game between the Texas Longhorns and Arizona State Sun Devils. In a statement released on social media, the Peach Bowl announced that Bevo, the legendary Texas live mascot, will not be allowed on the sidelines at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
“We love all of the great traditions of college football, and no doubt, Bevo is one of the best,” the bowl said. “But the unfortunate reality is there simply is not enough room on the sidelines of Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
“With the constraints of the stadium and prioritizing the safety of Bevo, the players, all the network cameras, support staff, cheerleaders, and photographers, we unfortunately will not be able to have Bevo on the field at the CFP quarterfinal at the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.”
The Longhorns have had a live steer as their mascot for over a century. There have been 15 Bevo mascots in history, with the current Bevo XV wrapping up his ninth season on the sidelines. Just weeks ago, Bevo was barred from the same venue in the SEC Championship Game.
Bevo weighs around 1,700 pounds and has a horn span of 58 inches. Finding a suitable enclosure for the massive animal is a problem, which is why the mascot cannot make the trip to Atlanta.
On the field, however, the Longhorns are firing on all cylinders. The team easily got past Clemson in the first round, winning 38-24 at home. Now, the Longhorns will take on the Big 12-winning Sun Devils. Texas is a 14-point favorite in the game (via BetMGM), the largest spread of any quarterfinal matchup.
The winner of the Peach Bowl will take on the winner of Oregon and Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl.
