The Seattle Seahawks were down 7-3 17 minutes into the NFL’s season-opener Thursday night.
Seattle was driving and had a first-and-1o in Green Bay territory. What came next surely shocked the NFL world.
A trick play. Gasp! Not even really a trick play, though. A smart play by quarterback Russell Wilson on the read option.
Wilson faked the handoff to Marshawn Lynch, pulled the ball down, ran left and pulled up and threw the ball to wide receiver Ricardo Lockette as Packers cornerback Sam Shields was anticipating Wilson running.
Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell gave credit to Seattle head coach Pete Carroll. Carroll, though, told reporters of the play’s origin.
“We’ll go anywhere to find a play,” Carroll said after the game. “And that one – uh, Muschamp at Florida, no … Auburn. They ran it. Give Gus Malzahn credit. That’s a great play. I kept telling them [the offensive staff and players] this summer, ‘it’ll work, it’ll work.’ But it didn’t work all summer.”
