A college football player says he is transferring because of his school’s COVID vaccine requirement.

Rutgers University defensive back Peyton Powell tweeted Tuesday that the school’s mandatory COVID vaccine policy left him with “no other choice” but to enter the transfer portal. In a follow-up tweet, Powell corrected the name of the school.

In March, Rutgers announced that it would require all students to be vaccinated before arriving on campus in the fall. At the start of fall camp in early August, Rutgers coach Greg Schiano told reporters that Powell was “not a member of the program.”

Powell is familiar with the transfer portal. He enrolled at Baylor in January 2019 but signed with Rutgers as a transfer on Dec. 18, 2019. Powell did not see the field in 2019 or 2020.
