In addition to the tour, Texas A&M officials gave an update on the progress of the stadium. Texas A&M chancellor John Sharp said the stadium is ahead of schedule despite some rain and is on track to be ready for the Aggies home opener on Sept. 12. Grass will be laid down on the field in July, according to construction official Greg McClure of Manhattan-Vaughn.
Officials also added that cameras will be closer to the field in the rebuilt stadium, giving television viewers a better view. Sharp also said that Texas A&M has strengthened the cellular service in the stadium to be able to handle 100,000 phones simultaneously in use in the stadium.
As a refresher, Texas A&M is in the second year of a renovation that will make Kyle Field the largest stadium in the SEC and the state of Texas. Last year, the stadium had a capacity of more than 106,000, which will drop to a little more than 102,000 once the renovations are complete this fall. This offseason, the entire west side of the stadium and the south end zone were demolished and are in the process of being rebuilt. The total cost of renovations is around $485 million.
