With the exception of Ole Miss vs. Vanderbilt, the slate of games this week in the SEC is abysmal. Many teams are big favorites and should go unchallenged.
So what will the headlines be come Monday morning?
SEC teams roll: As our boy Dickie V would say, “it’s cupcake city” in the SEC this week. Ole Miss-Vandy’s the lone conference game, and even that shouldn’t be too close. Expect to see a lot of backups playing in garbage time, and for us to not find out much about our teams this weekend.
QB battle still unresolved in Tuscaloosa: Nick Saban has stayed quiet on his plans for Blake Sims and Jacob Coker, but both should play this weekend against Florida Atlantic. Sims played well in the win over West Virginia last week, but many pundits nationally still feel the job will eventually be Coker’s. The Crimson Tide have Southern Miss the following week, giving the two another chance to win the job. It needs to be resolved by its matchup against Florida on September 20.
Bo Wallace plays better against Vandy: Despite the stat line, it was a very mediocre performance from Bo Wallace in Ole Miss’ win over Boise State last week. The Rebels have had a few extra days to work out the kinks, and against a Vanderbilt defense that was picked to pieces against Temple, expect Wallace to have a big day and to get to work from the opening kickoff.
Florida rolls against Eastern Michigan, but how improved are they? Hopefully Mother Nature cooperates in Gainesville this weekend and we can actually see Florida in Kurt Roper’s new offensive system. It won’t be close, and Jeff Driskel and other playmakers probably won’t play much in the second half. But at least we’ll have something to go off of for the Gators as they head into their conference opener against Kentucky.
South Carolina’s not who we thought they were: No need to fear Gamecock fans, your team isn’t horrible. Just in that one game. Steve Spurrier and his staff are too good, and they have great players. (Are you forgetting how well Carolina has recruited recently?) Yes, it might be a close game against East Carolina, but expect a much better effort, gameplan and performance from the men in garnet and black.
