Texas A&M currently ranks seventh in the SEC in recruiting according to 247 Sports.
There has been obvious turmoil recently surrounding the QB position, but the Aggies are still in decent shape.
CURRENT RECRUITNG CLASS
Texas A&M has an abundance of four-star prospects for the 2016 season. Most of its talent is coming on defense with the additions of DEs Justin Madubuike and Mark Jackson Jr. They also landed CBs Travon Fuller and Charles Oliver.
Now let’s take a look at some current needs.
QUARTERBACK
Losing after 2015: Kyler Murray, Kyle Allen
It’s obvious. Kyle Allen already announced that he is transferring and now Kyler Murray has chosen Oklahoma. It isn’t clear why these two didn’t want to stay in College Station, but Kevin Sumlin and his staff have some work to do. Right now, it looks like Jake Hubenak may be the man for the job. But what if he doesn’t pan out? Or what if he suffers a devastating injury? The Aggies don’t have any quarterbacks signed to the current class. This could pose a major issue.
RUNNING BACK
Losing after 2015: Tra Carson
The senior will be gone after the bowl game. We know that the Aggies will be playing with an inexperienced quarterback next season, so help from the backfield will be vital. As of now, Texas A&M’s only RB commit is three-star prospect Rakeem Boyd. This is an area for concern.
LINEBACKER
This isn’t a major need, but it’s clear that the Aggies are trying to boost their defense. They only have one commitment in 2016, it’s three-star ILB Tyrel Dodson.
OUTLOOK
Kevin Sumlin has had some success in College Station, but not enough. Texas A&M has the ability to move into the top tier of SEC programs, but seems to be taking a step back. The transfers of two five-star quarterbacks was disconcerting. Sumlin needs the Aggies to have a solid season in 2016 to quell the concern by boosters and administrators. Another strong recruiting class would restore some confidence.
