Nico Iamaleava and Tennessee stunningly parted ways over the weekend following a reported contract dispute that escalated just before the Vols’ spring game on Saturday.

After the initial shock of the news wore off, attention quickly went to where Iamaleava could play next season.

North Carolina was one of the first programs initially reported as a viable option for the former Vol. The Tar Heels have a ton of former NFL guys on the staff, including head coach Bill Belichick and former NFL GM Michael Lombardi running the football operations side of things. While that seemed like it could present a great match with Iamaleava, that reportedly won’t be the case.

According to On3’s Pete Nakos, North Carolina is out of the running. The Tar Heels are reportedly leading the race to sign South Alabama transfer quarterback Gio Lopez:

Iamaleava’s options appear to be shrinking as multiple other big-time programs like Ohio State and Notre Dame are reportedly not in the mix either. UCLA and Tulane are 2 other programs who have been linked to Iamaleava in the last couple days, but it’s unclear where he will end up at this stage.

The transfer portal will officially open on Wednesday.
