Florida was seeking some better competition at quarterback for 2016 after Will Grier transferred and Treon Harris struggled mightily to close the season.

The Gators may have found it as Purdue Boilermakers quarterback Austin Appleby enrolled at Florida on Monday and will be immediately eligible to practice and play as a graduate transfer.

Appleby has had an up-and-down career, fighting injuries and inconsistency throughout his career. He started the year as Purdue’s starting quarterback, but lost the job to David Blough midway through the season.

Appleby completed 57.5 percent of his passes for 1,260 yards last season. However he had eight touchdowns against eight interceptions. Starting the entire 2014 season, Appleby threw for 1,449 yards and 10 touchdowns against 11 interceptions.

It was all part of the struggles Appleby had at an underachieving Purdue program.

He should figure to be part of the equation to start at quarterback for Florida next year along with incumbent Treon Harris and newcomer Feleipe Franks.

Appleby released a statement via Twitter:
