QB Matthew Sluka is not going to suit up for UNLV anymore this season in a surprising and startling decision announced late Monday evening.
Sluka is a veteran college QB who began his career at Holy Cross before committing to play for UNLV and head coach Barry Odom. Sluka has since been instrumental in UNLV’s 3-0 start to the season, but the starting QB announced he is entering the transfer portal and will utilize his redshirt season.
According to his late-night announcement, Sluka claimed he was promised certain representations that have not been upheld since he enrolled. He also claims it has been made clear those commitments were not going to be fulfilled in the future.
“I have decided to utilize my redshirt year and will not be playing in any additional games this season,” wrote Sluka. “I committed to UNLV based on certain representations that were made to me, which were not upheld after I enrolled. Despite discussions, it became clear that these commitments would not be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program”

So far this season, Sluka was UNLV’s passing leader with 318 yards and 6 touchdowns while also leading the team with 253 rushing yards. UNLV has knocked off Houston and Kansas on the road so far this season, but it’s tough to envision the undefeated start lasting much longer without Sluka in the lineup.
