The LSU Tigers played an up-and-down season. Quarterback Anthony Jennings has not exactly played stellar, but I attribute a lot of that to the style of offense that the Tigers run.
LSU lost to Notre Dame after it allowed a game-winning field goal.
I’m going to take a look at the 75-yard touchdown pass from Jennings to John Diarse. It was the first play of the second half and the touchdown tied the game at 21.
LSU lined up in 11 personnel, with a tight end as the lone boundary receiver. You can see here that the Notre Dame defense lined up in a cover 2 look with the deepest defender only 10 yards off the ball. The Irish were just daring Jennings to beat them with his arm down the field.
Jennings executed a little rollout to the boundary to make it look like a quarterback run. It works to perfection as the Irish defensive backs were lured in toward the line of scrimmage. Once the defensive backs saw that it was a type of play-action, the boundary safety tried to recover. By then it was way too late.
Jennings rose up and hit Diarse behind the defense, and when you see the back of the jersey of a receiver in the SEC, you will not catch him. I supposed you can at least attempt to, though.
Jennings had a pretty tough year this year throwing the ball, but he’s young and has time to improve his mechanics and his knowledge of the offense. He needs to get better because defenses next year will be stacking the box to try and stop Leonard Fournette.
