Well that was a rough way to go out. Not only did Bo Wallace not have a very good game, but the Rebels got absolutely crushed in the Peach Bowl.
TCU harassed the senior quarterback all game long and ended up 10-of-23 for 109 yards, zero touchdowns and three picks, one of which that was intercepted in the end zone for a Horned Frogs touchdown. The result of this game was shocking, and TCU showed it was worthy of being in the playoff.
I’m going to break down one of the picks that Wallace threw in the first quarter.
You can see here that TCU is cover 2 pre-snap. The Rebels are in a three-by-one shotgun formation. They have three receivers to the field and one receiver to the boundary.
The Rebels ran a play-action out of the shotgun with a bubble screen going to the right. The action actually works a little bit and draws up the linebacker and field corner on the bubble screen.
You can notice here that the field corner realizes that this is all a ploy by the Rebels to try and hit sideline steak. The corner is seen here pointing and communicating to his safety help that there’s a receiver behind him.
Wallace didn’t do himself any favors. He not only was extremely late throwing the ball, but he stared down the receiver the entire time. This play should have been a big gain for Ole Miss and could have been a big confidence booster for Wallace and the offense, but instead resulted in yet another pick.
When you play against an offense as potent as TCU’s, you can’t afford to give them extra possessions. Not a good way to enter the offseason for Ole Miss.
