Hutson Mason finished his Bulldogs career on top.
Mason never put up the big numbers like some of the other guys in the country, but he was always reliable with the ball. Against a very solid Louisville defense, Mason finished 10-of-15 for 149 yards and a touchdown. He ended up getting knocked out of the game with an undisclosed injury, but Nick Chubb and the Bulldogs offensive line was able to take over.
I’m going to take a look at the touchdown pass from Mason to start the scoring.
Here the Bulldogs are in a three-by-one shotgun formation. The inside receiver on this formation is a flexed fullback. Louisville appears to be in a cover 3 pre-snap with press coverage to the boundary receiver.
Mason executed a quick flash fake to Chubb to draw the Cardinals linebackers up and allow the slot receiver to get a free release behind them. It worked.
Once the receivers to the field got a free release past the linebackers, it put a lot of pressure on the single-high safety. The slot receiver ran a deep crosser right in front the safety to occupy him, while the outside receiver ran a deep post behind him.
You can see here that the field corner thought he had help over the top and inside, but the deep crosser took out his help and Conley was wide open for the 45-yard touchdown. Mason put this ball right on the money.
