It’s not hyperbole to label the NFL Draft phone call as the most important phone call in a young player’s life, but that could not stop Quinshon Judkins from being caught off-guard on Friday night.
The former Ole Miss and Ohio State star did not have to wait long in Round 2, hearing the Cleveland Browns call his name with the 4th pick of the night (36th pick overall). Rather, a member of Judkins’s viewing party heard the running back’s phone ring and picked up the phone with Cleveland’s war room on the other line.
The entire sequence was caught by ESPN’s behind-the-scenes footage, but the reasons behind Judkins’s initial absence were unclear. However, the ESPN crew certainly speculated it was a call from nature that prompted Judkins to be out of the room.
“Sometimes you gotta go to the bathroom, Greenie,” said Booger McFarland. “That’s just how it goes.”
“If you know you know,” said Mike Greenberg. “When nature calls, sometimes that beats out when the Browns call.”
A little while after ESPN’s speculation blew up, Judkins had to clear the air. According to his side of the story, he had just stepped away to get a fresh drink, and the Browns were on the phone when he returned.
No matter how it worked out, Judkins will be set to make his NFL debut with Cleveland when the 2025 season rolls around!
