It wasn’t the blowout many expected, but a win is a win and that is good enough for struggling Texas A&M, which was without starting quarterback Trevor Knight.
Here is a rapid reaction of A&M’s 23-10 victory over UTSA.
What it means: Texas A&M improves its overall record to 8-3 as it turns its attention to a Thanksgiving Day showdown against SEC West rival LSU.
What I liked: After struggling as of late, the Aggies got off to a quick start when quarterback Jake Hubenak threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Josh Reynolds 4:30 into the first quarter. It was good for Hubenak to come out strong while playing for the injured Knight.
What I didn’t like: Even with a backup quarterback, it would’ve been nice to see the Aggies’ offense dominate UTSA a little bit more. The unit had to settle for three short field goals rather than finish drives by finding the end zone.
Who’s the man: Myles Garrett had a monster day with 4.5 sacks. Hubenak did enough to earn the win, completing 19-of-32 passes for 248 yards and a score. Reynolds was his go-to target throughout the day, finishing with 93 yards on 7 catches.
Key plays: Running back Trayveon Williams’ 47-yard touchdown with 8:22 remaining in the third quarter extended the Aggies’ lead to 23-7. While the Road Runners kept things close throughout the first half, Williams’ run gave Texas A&M a little more breathing room.
What’s next: The Aggies will remain in College Station for a marquee matchup with LSU at 3:30 p.m. EST on Thanksgiving.
