OFFENSIVE RED ZONE STATISTICS

Up to this point, LSU, Ole Miss and Kentucky are the only SEC teams to come away with points on every red zone trip. The Rebels have been the most impressive Power 5 school in the country, scoring on all 15 red zone attempts.

The only school in the country that’s been perfect in the red zone with more trips is Memphis (19). The next-best Power 5 school is Navy, which has converted all 12 of its trips.

However, looking a little bit closer shows that LSU has technically been the SEC’s most efficient team when it comes to scoring touchdowns in the red zone. The Tigers have gotten into the end zone 6 of 7 times (85.7 percent). That percentage is tied for fourth-best in the FBS. The Rebels are second in the conference with 12 TDs in 15 trips (80 percent).

Here’s a breakdown of how LSU and Ole Miss fared in their big wins on Saturday:
LSU: 5-for-5 (4 TDs)
Ole Miss: 4-for-4 (2 TDs)

To the Tide’s credit, it went a perfect 6-for-6 in the loss to Ole Miss with five TDs.

DEFENSIVE RED ZONE STATISTICS

Defensively, Georgia leads the SEC in red zone defense, allowing opponents to score on 4 of 7 attempts, or 57.1 percent of the time, which is fifth-best in the FBS. In reality, the Bulldogs are better than that. For instance, the only Power 5 team with a better percentage is West Virginia (50 percent), but the Mountaineers have only had to defend in the red zone twice.

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze has had good things to say about Vanderbilt’s defense leading up to their Week 4 matchup, and this may be part of the reason why. The Commodores are second behind the Bulldogs, allowing the opposition to score on just 5 of 8 trips (62.5 percent). Vandy was fairly successful against Georgia in Week 2 as the Bulldogs only scored a touchdown in 1 of 3 tries.

But if we’re going to talk about touchdown percentage in the red zone, Florida is the leader in that department. The Gators have only allowed a touchdown 2 out of 7 times. That was a deciding factor in the 14-9 win over Kentucky, whose offense settled for field goals both times it was inside the 20.
