Another quarterback is leaving the Alabama program.

According to AL.com sources, backup QB Cooper Bateman will transfer to a new school. The source said Bateman was granted his release last week.

With the College Football Playoff coming up, it’s strange that the Bateman news is coming out now. If he leaves before the semifinals on Dec. 31, Jalen Hurts and David Cornwell will be the only two scholarship quarterbacks left on the roster.

Bateman also serves as the team’s holder on field goals.

In limited action as Hurts’s backup this season, Bateman has completed 12 of his 14 pass attempts for 119 yards and a touchdown. He threw for 291 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in 2015.

His transfer destination, as well as his timetable for departure, is not yet known.
