On the verge of potentially earning more playing time, Alabama senior DB Maurice Smith will transfer schools, according to al.com.
After a strong spring game performance, Smith was considered the favorite to win the starting nickel corner position for the Crimson Tide in 2016, but instead will play somewhere else as a graduate transfer this season.
Smith played mostly on special teams, starting only two games at corner for the Crimson Tide. In last year’s College Football Playoff, Smith recorded two tackles and forced a fumble against Michigan State. He also made one tackle against Clemson in the title game.
His best game of the 2015 season came in the Iron Bowl against Auburn, where he recorded a sack and two tackles in Alabama’s 29-13 victory.
Smith isn’t the first defensive back to transfer from Alabama this offseason. Shawn Burgess-Becker left the team earlier this month.
And, with Tony Brown still potentially facing a suspension and after Hootie Jones’s arrest, the secondary is quickly becoming a big concern for the Tide.
