Will Chip Kelly be Florida’s next head football coach?

That’s the question just about every Gators fan is hoping will soon be answered.

There were reports on Sunday that Kelly was meeting with Florida officials in New Hampshire to sign a contract, but when UCLA announced it had fired Jim Mora, things changed a bit.

Kelly may want to hear offers from both Florida and UCLA before making a decision.

Even if the Gators get the nod over the Bruins for Kelly’s services, things could be a little more complicated than previously thought.

There was some speculation on Monday that Kelly would not be able to accept the Florida job until after Saturday’s game between the Gators and Florida State, because if he did, he would not receive a $5 million payout owed to him by the San Francisco 49ers.

However, Trey Wallace of The Read Optional contested Monday that, based on info provided in a January Forbes report, Florida could have Kelly whenever it wanted him (if it did want him).

“Another factor that could benefit Kelly and the future school that hires him is that he is due $6.5 million from the 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles even if he decides to take the year off,” the Forbes report said. “… Kelly will get the $6.5 million regardless of where he lands.”

Here’s the full tweet from Wallace (article linked above):

The Gators and Seminoles kick off at Noon ET on Saturday.
