Report says LSU is closing in on Tom Herman as next head coach

Two sources have told Horns Digest’s Chip Brown that LSU is closing in on hiring Houston coach Tom Herman as its next coach.
Brown covers the Texas Longhorns, LSU’s biggest competition for Herman’s services if they decide to part with coach Charlie Strong.
LSU athletic director Joe Alleva declined comment on the report according to The Advocate’s Ross Dellenger.

Brown reports that Herman has an offer from LSU, but is waiting to accept until he knows what will happen in Austin. It was reported Sunday that Strong had been fired, but UT athletic director Mike Perrin denied that any decision would be made prior to the Texas-TCU game Friday.

Multiple recent reports said the Tigers were targeting FSU coach Jimbo Fisher. At his weekly radio show, Fisher told Seminoles fans to “be patient” in regards to the rumors about his future.
The Advertiser reports that talks stalled with Fisher on Wednesday, and members of the Tiger Athletic Foundation met with Herman in Houston on Thursday:
“There was a group meet with Herman today in Houston,” a TAF member said Thursday. “This is moving in Herman’s direction.”
Reports suggested that interim coach Ed Orgeron would be given the opportunity to make his pitch for the future to Alleva following Thursday’s game at Texas A&M.
The chairman of Houston’s Board of Regents recently stated that the Cougars will not be outbid by LSU, Texas or any other Power 5 program pursuing Herman.
