With senior signal-caller Jeremy Johnson relegated to a third-string standing behind Sean White and John Franklin III, internet rumors swirled Wednesday night — insinuating Johnson may have quit the team over the demotion.

However, those rumors were debunked — as Johnson was involved in Thursday’s afternoon practice.
Johnson did see time in the season-opening loss to Clemson. While he was somewhat effective throwing the football (4-of-6 for 38 yards and one interception), he ran the ball six times for -18 yards.
It’s truly anyone’s guess as to what head coach Gus Malzahn will do with his quarterbacks. All three featured in the opener, and the position still has an ambiguous cloud ominously hanging over it.
Johnson is the most experienced of the bunch, and has physical tools that are undeniable. At his size (6-foot-5, 234 pounds), it could behoove Auburn to utilize Johnson in a similar manner to how Texas uses its reserve quarterback, Tyrone Swoopes. This in theory would include immense involvement during red-zone opportunities.
