Ryan Williams scores late TD against Vanderbilt on gutsy call by Kalen DeBoer

Ryan Williams is only 17 years old.

(Sorry, we legally have to mention that.)

He’s also a hell of a wide receiver. He can do just about anything on the football field and is already a star for the Crimson Tide.

Alabama is struggling mightily against Vanderbilt on Saturday despite being the No. 1 team in the country. Trailing 40-28 late in the 4th quarter, the Tide desperately needed a touchdown on a 4th down deep in Vandy territory.

The call was a gutsy one by coach Kalen DeBoer. But Williams took a toss behind the line of scrimmage and managed to make the most of it, finding the end zone in impressive fashion:

If that play call didn’t work, DeBoer would have been dragged on social media for weeks. But obviously, games aren’t played on social media (thankfully). Instead, DeBoer’s squad cut the Vanderbilt lead to 40-35, giving itself a chance for a late comeback.

Meanwhile, Williams, who is only a freshman (sorry, have to legally mention that, too), continues to make a strong case for Biletnikoff Award consideration.

The Tide would be wise to keep giving Williams the ball early and often moving forward. For now, though, we’ll see if they can call their way all the way back in this game.
