SEC, Netflix reportedly nearing deal for new football documentary series
The SEC is in talks to be featured in an “immersive” documentary from Netflix, according to a report.
The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand and Seth Emerson shared that news on Thursday, reporting that the SEC and Netflix are nearing a deal to give the streamer full access for a new documentary series.
The doc would be molded after Netflix’s popular “Drive to Survive” series, which focused on Formula 1. Netflix also produced “Full Swing” — a documentary series that highlighted the PGA Tour.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey did not confirm the pending deal with Netflix when asked for comment on Thursday.
“We make announcements when we make announcements,” Sankey told The Athletic. “Despite what sources like to say, nothing’s done until it’s done.”
Per the report, teams within the SEC would be able to opt out of participation. The story says Georgia has shown “some interest” in being featured in the documentary, but a final decision has not been made.
Netflix’s ‘Drive to Survive’ series is widely-credited with increasing the popularity of Formula 1 racing around the world.
If the deal is finalized and begins filming in 2024, the documentary would have the opportunity to give fans a behind-the-scenes look at college football as the sport endures numerous changes. Conference realignment and College Football Playoff expansion are set to have a massive impact on college football this year as the sport also deals with evolving legislation regarding transfers and NIL regulations.
The 2024 college football season will begin in late August.
