SEC fans are a prideful bunch. From historically great programs to wonderful fan traditions to the conference’s recent dominance over the college football landscape, there’s plenty to chant “S-E-C!” about. Here’s a look at five things the conference’s fans can point to from week two.
5. Taking care of business
The SEC went 8-1 in out-of-conference play on Saturday, with the only loss coming with Tennessee falling to No. 4 Oklahoma on the road. Every favorite won, and Arkansas pulled an upset on the road. The SEC’s record against non-conference opponents is now 28-2 through three weeks.
4. Running wild
SEC offenses have been putting up big numbers so far, and a good number of them are doing it on the ground. Five teams – Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, Alabama and Florida – all rank in the top 25 in rushing attacks in the country. Arkansas, third in the country, has been particularly impressive, as they rang up 7 touchdowns on the ground against Texas Tech even though the Red Raiders knew the run was coming.
3. Early season rivalry matchups
Georgia and South Carolina gave fans an early candidate game of the year in Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday, an emotionally draining affair in front of a packed house despite a long weather delay. Even Kentucky and Florida, a matchup that’s been one-sided for nearly three decades, gave us a hotly contested thriller. With a heavier SEC slate coming this week, the games are going to get even more intense.
2. Reeling ’em in
This should come as no surprise, as top programs tend to land top recruits, with the cycle going on and on. The SEC has six of the 10 best recruiting classes in the country, including four of the top five, and all but Vanderbilt are ranked in the top 50. The conference’s early season showing against out-of-conference foes will surely help bolster those numbers.
1. The top 10 in the polls
Half of the 10 best teams in the county not only come from one conference, but one division. After Mississippi moved into the top 10 for the first time in five years, the SEC West now has five teams ranked 1-10. Three other SEC East teams (Georgia, South Carolina and Missouri) appeared in the rankings, rounded out another dominant week.
