Georgia tight end Brock Bowers was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week after posting his 5th 100-yard receiving game and 3 touchdowns in the top-ranked Bulldogs’ 48-7 rout of South Carolina in their SEC opener on Saturday afternoon.
Bowers finished with 5 catches for 121 yards and 2 TD grabs, including a 78-yard scoring catch, and added a 5-yard touchdown run. It was the 2nd time in his brilliant career that Bowers had 2 receiving TDs and 1 rushing score in the same game.
On the other side of the ball, LSU safety Jay Ward was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Tigers with 11 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, and a game-clinching interception in their win over Mississippi State. Ward helped the Tigers hold the Bulldogs nearly 200 yards below their season average.
Texas A&M punter Nik Constantinou was named the conference’s Special Teams Player of the Week, with 3 of his 6 punts in the win over Miami being downed inside the Hurricanes’ 10-yard line. One of the punts was downed at the 1-yard line. He averaged 44.3 yards per punt.
Vanderbilt quarterback AJ Swann was named SEC Freshman of the Week after passing for 255 yards and 4 touchdowns in his first career start, a victory at Northern Illinois. Swann became just the 2nd SEC true freshman quarterback since 2002 to throw for at least 4 scores in their first career start.
In the trenches, Ole Miss’ Nick Broeker was named SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week after helping the Rebels amass 316 yards rushing in a victory at Georgia Tech.
LSU defensive end BJ Ojulari was named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week after posting 4 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks in the win over Mississippi State.
