Streaks and records: What to watch for in Week 3

Remember when former LSU QB Rohan Davey beat North Texas in his first start at Tiger Stadium back in 1999?

While his career was fun to watch, I think it is safe to say most of us don’t. But that win was actually the beginning to a pretty cool streak at LSU. Davey was the first of 11 consecutive LSU quarterbacks to win their first start at Tiger Stadium.

Thanks to a weather cancellation of  Week 1’s game against McNeese State and a road trip to Starkville in Week 2, new Tigers QB Brandon Harris will make his first official start there on Saturday.

Harris will have to defeat Auburn if that streak is going to remain alive. His first career start came at Auburn last season, a game which LSU lost 41-7.

It will be one of several interesting things to watch for during one of the league’s top games this week.

Here is a noteworthy streak or record to keep an eye on for the other 13 SEC teams as we enter play in Week 3:

  • Alabama (vs. Ole Miss): The Crimson Tide is 25-1 against Ole Miss when playing as the home team, which includes a 12-game home winning streak in the series. This year’s game is at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
  • Arkansas (vs. Texas Tech): Though QB Brandon Allen snapped a streak of 134 pass attempts without an interception against Toledo, the senior still has just two interceptions in his last 244 attempts.
  • Auburn (at LSU): Auburn has lost its last seven games at Tiger Stadium. It last emerged from Death Valley victorious in 1999.
  • Florida (at Kentucky): The Gators have won 28 consecutive games against Kentucky, which is the nation’s longest active winning streak against a major opponent in an annual series, according to the Florida SID staff.
  • Georgia (vs. South Carolina): RB Nick Chubb enters the game with 10 consecutive 100-yard rushing games. It is the second-longest active streak in FBS, trailing only Toledo’s Kareem Hunt (11).
  • Kentucky (vs. Florida): The Wildcats have converted on 18 consecutive red zone opportunities, a streak that stretches back to last season’s game against Mississippi State.
  • Mississippi State (vs. Northwestern State): The Bulldogs have eight consecutive wins against non-conference opponents during the regular season. Mississippi State last lost to Oklahoma State in the 2013 season opener.
  • Missouri (vs. UConn): A win against the Huskies would give Mizzou a 3-0 record to begin the season for a third consecutive year.
  • Ole Miss (at Alabama): QB Chad Kelly has led the Rebels to a touchdown on seven consecutive drives during which he was the quarterback.
  • South Carolina (at Georgia): Steve Spurrier owns a 16-6 career record against Georgia. He was 11-1 against the Bulldogs while at Florida, and is 5-5 since joining the Gamecocks.
  • Tennessee (vs. Western Carolina): Though it took overtime to get him a reception against Oklahoma, WR Pig Howard will bring an FBS-best streak of 34 consecutive games with a catch to Neyland Stadium on Saturday.
  • Texas A&M (vs. Nevada): The Aggies have been the first team to score in 35 of the 41 games Kevin Sumlin has coached. They are 28-7 when scoring first.
  • Vanderbilt (vs. Austin Peay): Looking for their first win of the season, the Commodores carry a 17-1 record against FCS opponents, are 13-0-1 all-time against Ohio Valley Conference opponents, and 1-0 against Austin Peay.
