We’re into the heart of the SEC schedule, and pretty much every week is going to feature historically great matchups from here on out. Each week, we’ll take a look back at the history of the week’s most storied matchup and rehash some of the more memorable games. This week: Tennessee at No. 12 Georgia.
All-time record: Tennessee leads, 21-20-2
Current streak: Georiga, won 4
Longest win streaks: Tennessee 9; Georgia 5
Big moments in Georiga-Tennessee history
- 1899; Tennessee 5, Georgia 0: This rivalry is nearly prehistoric, with the first matchup dating back 115 years. Tennessee won a real barn-burner to kick off the series.
- 1980; Georgia 16, Tennessee 15: Herschel Walker debuted in the rivalry with a real bang, bowling over a Tennessee defender for his first collegiate score, adding another TD later to secure the win.
- 1996; Tennessee 29, Georgia 17: Peyton Manning never lost to the Bulldogs, and 1996 might have been his finest game against them. He threw for 371 yards and 2 TDs in Athens, at one point completing a school-record 11 straight passes, as the Vols won their sixth straight over Gerogia.
- 2001: Georgia 26, Tennesee 24: In Mark Richt’s first game in Neyland Stadium, Tennessee scored with 44 second remaining to seemingly put the game away. David Greene then led Georgia down the field in the final seconds and scored the go-ahead touchdown with 6 seconds left on the clock. The win broke a 5-game losing streak for the Bulldogs in Knoxville.
- 2013: Georgia 34, Tennessee 31 (OT): It took well over 100 years to get the first overtime game in this series. Georgia lost several key players to injury throughout the game, but Aaron Murray bailed them out with a touchdown pass with 5 seconds remaining in regulation, followed by Georgia winning on a field goal in the first OT.
